Artist Statement:
As I reached the final years of my formal education in art, I began
to realize that people were more interested in presentation than
in art. People had this strange fascination with frames, mats, with
archival paper, and what I called the "mummy complex."
Was art meant to last forever? Why? If no one knew what art was
meant to represent, did it mean anything? Why did my fellow students
think ART IS BIG and what was so great about painting anyway? Fundamental
questions such as these were important to me. More and more, I began
to explore the non-material side of art.
During my last year of schooling, I took a hard look at my own work
and began making some important decisions. Art didn't have to be
about commodities. It didn't have to be big. It didn't have to be
something rich people bought to cover that bare spot over the sofa.
It could be anything. It could be a walk through the neighborhood.
It could be an idea. It could be completely conceptual.
As my own art-making progressed, I produced fewer physical objects.
My art became ideas expressed through actions and documentation.
Today, almost everything I do artistically is conceptual in nature.
I have come to the conclusion that true art is primarily mental
exploration. We create art in order to better understand the world
around us.
